It's just a brand awareness PR play. Such small spikes help keep the brand relevant.

They may be able to see a SMALL spike with the free PR across the locations where this news reaches. But that's not the point.

The point is to not be forgotten (not even staying relevant, or remembered. Just not being forgotten)

Also, making fun of oneself is a great way to have others perceive you positively.

Well it depends on the brand in question. KFC is a big brand. So I don't think changing a tag line will affect their business that much. They re already established in the fast food industry.
