US has done its study on 242 entrepreneurs from different fields, about 50% of them were somewhere or the other found depressed..

Gaurav Mittal

I think the only way to handle your low times is creating a clout of friends or fellow entrepreneurs who can understand you.

Eventually, you will come to a point where you understand that -'This too shall pass'

When an Eastern sage was desired by his sultan to inscribe on a ring the sentiment which, amidst the perpetual change of human affairs, was most descriptive of their real tendency, he engraved on it the words : — "And this, too, shall pass away." It isimpossible to imagine a thought more truly and universally applicable to human affairs than that expressed in these memorable words, or more descriptive of that perpetual oscillation from good to evil, and from evil to good, which from the beginning of the world has been the invariable characteristic of the annals of man, and so evidently flows from the strange mixture of noble and generous with base and selfish inclinations, which is constantly found in the children of Adam

Piyush Soni

I 100%agree on this!!! Sharing do makes a hell lot of difference.

Gaurav Mittal

True. What I have learnt it that we all take ourselves too seriously. The moment we understand that we are inconsequential, we are sorted.

I spend more time with my family, talk with my mom about anything just to change my mood.

My technique is not to stay free when you're low, engage yourself into anything - a game of ludo,a phone call,a web series, etc

netflix also works for me,helps me to take my attention away from whatever is making me feel low.

Deepanjan Datta

thats not depression.

Shivam Malhotra

the post was about depressing moments & low times, not about depression.have faced depression personally so I know the difference well🙂

Piyush Soni

And elon musk also said, Running a startup is like chewing glass and staring into the abyss. After a while you stop staring, but glass chewing never ends..
Being strong is the key. I am not at all judging anybody and dont know what anybody is going through but can only say that in whichever situation you are be strong..!!

Ayush Agarwal

I somewhat agree with the statement about entrepreneurs and depression because it's really lonely based on entrepreneurs having a different perspective to everything. And their interests are not similar to the regular guys around them.

What could work is surrounding yourselves with people who think like you do, that's why I keep on searching for groups with entrepreneurs where I feel happy and comfortable.
Books and web series are lot of relief as well.

Piyush Soni

True entrepreneurs life cannot be depression free because we are somewhat different from the herd doing something different everyday to sustain and grow our business!!!

Ayush Agarwal

True that. I am grateful to the communities which brings like minded people together and making everyone feel they're not alone. Glad to be in this Pushcart community

Depression is a mental health problem. So r u meaning that entrepreneurs are prone to mental illness?

Deepanjan Datta

Nirmal Choudhary

Bhai mental health problem and mental illness are different thing, then are you saying that physically handicapped people are physically ill people.
this health education needs to be spread among Indians that mental health is a real thing and it is not anything related to illness or retarded or like that it is a phase or u can say problem but not illness that most people goes thru and don't recognize it.
Because it is a taboo to tell that they are in depression or anxiety because then they will be judged ill rather it is more on emotional side so don't say they are prone to mental illness

Deepanjan Datta

I am talking about mental health problem like depression which has a relation with mental stress. In my view, unless there is a prognostic tool for frailty (fragile state of mental health), it would be very difficult to predict and prevent such a condition.

Nirmal Choudhary

yes true that there has to be have good tools but i guess more importantly people need to talk about it more than keeping it a taboo , in a country like ours these tools and methods are not much developed as we use the methods of west which are based on their diaspora.
Hope From now the importance of mental health will be discussed and educate people about it because it is as important as physical health.

Deepanjan Datta

just by talking, we will produce "anda". There are so many chatbots now a days which claim that they have AI based and i used one of them to know how they are working. All these mental health platforms are full of shit. U can talk to thiusands of people; i can go to party, drink, dance. Nobe of them will reduce your problems. It has to be treated only.

Nirmal Choudhary

haha na na we don't want anda i meant human to human talk, this can never be replaced by chatbots or ai.
And by let's talk i meant progressive and health related talk obviously not just random and unhealthy and unproductive talk.

I've been an entrepreneur all my life, since 2004 when I was 19 years old.. its been a rollercoaster since. Highs and lows are a way of life, feeling depressed is very common. The only constant has been trusting in a higher force and believing - everything happens for the best..

I remember few months back, me and my cofounder thought we had almost cracked a scalable model.. it looked very promising.. a few unknown variables came our way which threw us off completely... I told him, maybe its for the best.. if we had compounded at this rate and these variables had hit us later than sooner, we would've gotten screwed completely.

Its easier said than done, but try as hard as you can and find solace in these 5 words - everything happens for the best..

Piyush Soni

 Thanks for sharing your part!!

Sooner or later as an entrepreneur, you are going to face off against depression. At least the odds are extremely high. Those that deny it are probably hiding it or still in denial. It’s a virtually guaranteed part of entrepreneur life. The good news is that just knowing this gives you a huge edge going in.

Piyush Soni

True one should know the positives as well as negatives of the things he is doing in his life. Positives makes him strong, negatives should make him stronger!!💪💪

Having a great support system for an entrepreneur is really important. Seen my father go through really hard times in our Manufacturing business, where the family and close friends supported in a large way. In my own experience, even as late as last year where I saw months of hard work and investment disappear in an instant and no light ahead, I had a great set of friends, close family and most importantly my wife who gave me a lot of support and not let me spiral down.

For ongoing downtimes, have a hobby that is disconnected from work, meditate, take hikes or a drive, do a complex puzzle or crossword... Whatever immerses your mind so deeply that you actually break away from what is depressing you...

Depression for Entrepreneurs.. sure I can relate to this topic well.
As a normal employee, I wouldn't care about depression till March 31st 2020, but I have taken a crazy decision on 1st Jan 2020 which made me leave my job, comfort zone, fixed salary.
I decided to be an entrepreneur and start my own company.
Ever since then 2020 is very critical not just for me but also whole world. ( I don't want to go on the side effects of 2020 because I can write a book about this damn thing)
So, left my high paying job and started my company.
Ever since, I did alot things which now shaped as GetMePilot.
I get alot of calls about my student loans, bank emi and friends asking me money ( just for fun).
So I am lucky enough to be with my working family where my mother is a banker and sister is a doctor. My sister has 2 kids so adorable and fun.
I forget my office bills when I'm playing with them.
As an entrepreneur, I have 5 people in my team whom we should pay salaries and pay for rents.
We are happy to have few paying clients to support us initially and we are cash positive.
Overall for a guy who desired to start a company in 2020 amid of crisis.
This mental depression is nothing.
P.S: I don't know whether it's good or bad but I just ventout what I have..

I try to immerse myself in the Kalinga Narthana Thillana, imagine lord Krishna dancing on the heads of Kaliya Serpent and try to see all my problems as that serpent on which my lord is dancing. The effects of the entire song mesmerizes me and I forget about my problems.

Punit Gandhi

Some hobby or strenuous physical activity and whatever you choose, put it in your schedule. And don't miss that part of your schedule. It helps in taking mind off your work or help release happy hormone or both.
I learnt dancing🙃

PS: doesn't matter if this is a research or not, as an entrepreneur you might be subjected to a lot of unwanted pressure, so taking care of mental and physical health is important.

Piyush Soni

True. We can all agree to this one!!!

Deepshikha Dalchand

First thing, I mentally accept the fact that I am having a moment where I am feeling low, or depressed. Its normal, its not something to run away from, and it also doesn't define me. Second, I turn off notifications on my phone, and use Insight Timer. It has some fantastic guided meditations and soundscapes that help me just focus on the present moment. On such days, I also push myself to exercise, even if I don't want to. It really helps me. Listening to my favorite music also helps quite a bit. Or I'll whip up some comfort food, and watch some funny tv series. I'll reach out to friends and family who are a part of my support system. There are also some amazing webcomics that talk about the topic in a great way, look up Lunar Babboon! Also, on days when it gets too much, consider speaking to a therapist. It really helps. There are some mental health helplines which are quite good as well.

Listen to good music, talk to a loved one, go for a drive, eat some cheese pizza, watch a new show on Netflix / Prime but don't give yourself space to think about anything negative or depressing. It won't get you anywhere fine. Some find peace in meditation while some find peace in making love. Figure what works for you best and get to it !

Saurabh Gautam

I had watched movies ordered cheese pizza or rolls with cheese ...but it helped me come out of it.....though I put on weight....but it worked better than any other therapy

Abhirath Shah

Saurabh Gautam absolutely with you on this one, I've put on 3 - 4 kilos myself since March but it makes me feel good from the inside😁therapy is therapy in its own way, when you can come out of it yourself first you don't need to get anyone else to help you. Be positive.

Rashmi Vallabhajosyula

There are so many emotional upheavals to being an entrepreneur. Each of us can write a book on it. I believe Depression as a physiological condition needs medical intervention and advice. The other measures to keep my sanity that have worked for us ( hubby and I have both been entrepreneurs for over 12 years).
