Bhavik Jain .

We have been working on our dining tables and ratty couches for the fourth month in a row.🙁🙁

And while we have accepted this new normal in our own ways, this WFH is now taking a toll on our budgets in ways we hadn’t anticipated!

Be it high electricity and internet bills, costly work equipment such as laptops and ergonomic chairs, or added expense on small rations like coffee and snacks. 😞😞

Should companies compensate for our Work-from-home costs?

1. They aren't saving "tons" of money on rent unless they have permanently vacated the office (which most of them haven't).

2. Again, most of them weren't providing free snacks in the office to begin with anyway.

Shivam Malhotra

Shriyash Patil lets not use that as an argument for refunds because its a broken one.Aren't employees saving money because of 0 travel cost + no spending on snacks and everything else (once you go out, there are so many things you end up spending on).

Shriyash Patil

Pankaj Vijayvargiya valid point. 1.I was under the assumption that companies aren't paying rent these days and the nature of work will shift altogether. Are corporate paying rent even these days!? When the government has said that no one should be pushed out or be affected by inability to pay rent!?

2. Wether they were initially providing free snacks or not they should right now. A lot of workers will stay if they do that! 🤣😂 #justkidding

1. The landlords in India are suckers and they aren't sparing anyone, not even corporates! And even the kind hearted ones who are following - remember the request from government is to "Skip" the rents for a few months, not "waive them off".

2. Agree FTW!:D

Shriyash Patil

Shivam Malhotra yeah I should have thought about that as well. Employees are actually saving time as well. In some cases up to 3 hours.

Shivam Malhotra

Shriyash Patil and while many complain that workload has gone up,I think it has gone down (at least in my team).I dont know when my employees are working for how long.

Shriyash Patil

Shivam Malhotra if you want to offend your team members ask them to use desktime. You will get to know details. I don't know how you can keep the goodwill the same after asking them to do that. Just a suggestion. It seemed to have worked in some case and failed in some other.

Bhavik Jain

Shriyash Patil What is desktime?

Shubham Bajaj

Shriyash Patil I am sitting in office because I have to pay full rent anyways.

Ankush Mehrotra

Who said companies are saving on rent? Month on month rent, electricity, maintenance and other charges are going without fail.
Above that yes only free snacks cost can be saved, but other costs are still on. I am not sure about companies who have shut their offices permanently

Aman Arora

What they are saving shouldn't be the justified argument for compensation. It's none of employees concern, else employees must start acting as stake holders, and le liable for losses as well.

Having said that, it's not an easy question to answer coz employees are also saving much money on fuel and vehicle maintenance.

The answer has more of a ethical and motivation form factor - Companies can definitely offer a bit of perks against internet and electricity expenses, but only to encourage employees. Not as a compensation.

*All views are personal. Doesn't reflect my employers ideology and may differ.

Shriyash Patil

It's a software that tracks employees activity online on his laptop and gives minute by minute report to you and the employer.

Bhavik Jain

Does it helps you to the productivity of employees?

Shriyash Patil

for me it didn't make a difference actually. I was comfortable with it! It made no difference, I kept doing my work as always!😇😄

Bhavik Jain

ha ha ha and did it somebody find a way to cheat the app?

Shriyash Patil

Dont know and never thought of cheating the app..😅Obviously there must be something though.

Agni Chatterjee

I think unless offices are shut and the companies Stop paying rent lease , you can't expect much because it is sunk cost for companies as well. Any additional cost would just get added to employees CTC basically. We in our company are providing pc and other equipment if required , also some funds if someone needs to buy tables etc but rest we are not considering yet.

Bhavik Jain

True unless the office are shut & also the landlord isn't asking for rent.

Vineet Nandan Gupta

Travel Time and Money is being saved... That’s a better compensation...

Prateeka Kamath

It's a bad time man. There are people who haven't even received salaries, in months!

Bhavik Jain

True it is for many people, many are left with no Jobs too

But keeping this scenario of losing jobs, aside what do you think about the demand of paying for the expenses?

Naresh Shetti

Guess paying some expenses is going to yield good results. Companies r spending unrealistic amt of money to make for employee satisfaction. If some companies agree to slash down some cost of real estate, they can get their employee comfortable with a fraction of cost compared to a wfh set up

Durbha Shri Hari

I work with Autodesk India and they sent me chair computer table and a extra screen. But most of the companies don’t do it!

Bhavik Jain

Wow, you are lucky

Durbha Shri Hari

Adding to that we have company leaves two days in June and July end as the management feels that it’s really difficult to WFH as there are many things like household chores, kids, pets and a lot which have to be managed by us! I wouldn’t say Iam lucky but I would say I am working with a management which has empathy

Avinash Kewlani

Same here, BNY Mellon India has also provided a table & a chair to WFH...
With regards to leaves, all companies have adopted to give compulsory leave to employees to reduce the financial impact on account as they have to pay the employees for balance leaves when they quit

Bhavik Jain

Thats a good news that a few companies have such empathy for its employees

Avinash Kewlani

Yes, they even supplied UPS and batteries to ensure BCP is in place...

Bhavik Jain

Wow thats great.

Durbha Shri Hari

Avinash that’s truly amazing! Indian companies should come up and treat their native employees with empathy! I have Indian MNC that I worked with arranging our client side people to stay in hotels like Marriott and giving king like treatment! But what about us? We r their backbone!

Varun Surana

Will you offer your travel cost and time for travel to company if they do so ?

Few companies are paying for internet and electricity

By the way you are lucky one that you still have a job where many people are with no job because of covid

Bhavik Jain

People are offering the time they saved because of not travelling, many are working for than their usual hours

Yes I am lucky to have a job when compared to people who were thrown out of job even after performing their best

Varun Surana

exactly so many companies are also offering manythings. Just imagine what if they ask you for no work no salary:(

Bhavik Jain

It will be a very sad moment if they do so but keeping this scenario aside do you think we should ask for money for the internet & other things?

Varun Surana

totally depend company 2 company

Bhavik Jain

What about your company?

Varun Surana

we are working from office. When we were working from home no one asked for the same . Few poor performers lost their jobs and few made super strong importance

Bhavik Jain

Oh so did you hire new people after firing poor performers?

Varun Surana

interviews are going on

Bhavik Jain

Has this lockdown & COVID changed the way you judge the people?

Varun Surana

yes, alot.

Bhavik Jain

what changes you have made? What is that you look for which you didnt use to

Mohit Nanda

But what about commuting cost and more importantly, time that we are saving? I guess I used to spend more in commuting than what I am doing now. Just a thought! I think companies will start paying less in the future if you opt for work from home permanently. They will just add a one time setup cost and a small
Fixed fee for internet etc in your ctc only.

Bhavik Jain

I think the same for " I think companies will start paying less in the future if you opt for work from home permanently. They will just add a one time setup cost and a small
Fixed fee for internet etc in your ctc only."

I use to spend around 3K a month on food etc when I used to go to office but now I spend only 1K

Arsh Raina

IF your company's finances weren't badly hit, they should provide assistance.

Bhavik Jain

But most of them are not and do you think that HR should make a mandate for doing this?

Arsh Raina

I think so, I don't work in India, however my company automatically gave us an extra allowance to ensure we have good quality internet. It's wrong to assume that everyone has enough, many people might be living paycheck to paycheck. Maybe your colleagues can have an online petition style email to your HR requesting for a standard increase. In our case, it was 30 USD flat for all full-time staff.

Sooraj Kumar R

This post is such a joke for a group like this. If You're staying home most of the time and your expenses haven't reduced by at least 25% in all this time, please don't consider being an entrepreneur. You'll be horrible with managing the budgets and the finances.

I'd probably expect my employer to cover my internet bill at most.

Sayan Ganguly

Well, this calls for a restructuring of compensation structure. Internet and electricity bill allowances at least toh banta hai.
But, only allowances may be given. Remaining is your budget planning skills too.
Further, those working in Customer Support Processes (Voice Support especially), either the company pays for a cloud telephony system, or provides them with phones. I was really hoping for the industry to grow. But a proverbial "our executives are busy" looks like a joke too.

L Uv Mishra

What should they do for students ? Should we ask the elctricity and internate bills to managements ?Or ask them to less the annual fee ? Even parents are not considering our porblems😄

Bhavik Jain

Try it, may be you might get some cashback

Starke Frau

WFH a product delivered by Covid😂with more of pain and uninterest in work.
More expenses occuring as compare to normal days like bills for internet, electricity ,office setup etc.
On flip side comapanies are saving maintainence expenses and saving on No office parties,no travel reimbursment,no bdaycakes ,No client visit and no increments😅😁

Either it should be paid or term it reimbursment people can claim.

Aparna Ganesh

What about having saved travel cost last 3 months? And time and energy, (both equating to money)we save by not having to travel and WFH ?

Bhavik Jain

but travelling cost was not Paid by company

Tarun Savita Rajaputhran

In times that companies are trying to stay afloat even though business is not as usual. It’s tough for founders to pay salaries in a lot of cases. The savings on electricity, internet and other office expenses are adding to the runway fund. They are somehow adjusting funds till whenever possible. As employees let’s wait it out. This could be our way of contributing towards the company we are building together

Varun Varadarajan

On the other hand, there are these brands that have popped up just to address such problems. These guys started the first exclusive work-from-home furniture brand focusing on laptop specific sizes for workstations and keeping in consideration limited space availability at home. Was thrilled when they approached me for Digital Marketing. It is working very well for them` too, because a lot of companies are sponsoring the people for furniture and also there are parents who are buying these as study tables for children.https://www.hoffice.co.in/

Kapil Agarwal

Companies like pwc is providing internet and headphones conveyance of upto 3k pr month

Apoorv Bapat

Ideally they should, and I feel, most would have. But I will not hold most companies at gunpoint for this as they are themselves doing fairly badly at this stage.

However, if a company is actually growing and not supporting employees, it would be sad.

Akash Agarwal

And we are finding it difficult to hire people since the over funded startups have spoiled the market by overpaying people and that is giving an illusion to candidates about their over inflated market value.
